Plan a Visit

Plan a Visit – From a Day Out to a Yorkshire Weekend. Only have a day? Explore one of Harrogate, Knaresborough or Ripon at your own pace, with time for its streets, landmarks and a relaxed lunch. Staying for the weekend opens up all three: enjoy Harrogate’s gardens, walk beside Knaresborough’s River Nidd, then discover Ripon and nearby Fountains Abbey. It’s an easy way to turn a short visit into a memorable Yorkshire break.

Plan a Day, Weekend or Week in Harrogate, Knaresborough and Ripon

Here are the three plans with addresses and clickable visitor links. Town-centre browsing and riverside walks do not have a single entrance, so I’ve given a useful starting point for each.

A day visit: Harrogate and Knaresborough

Morning — Harrogate: Walk through Valley Gardens, between Valley Drive and Cornwall Road, Harrogate. Then browse the Montpellier Quarter and stop for lunch. Visit North Yorkshire

Afternoon — Knaresborough: Explore Knaresborough Castle and Courthouse Museum, Castle Yard, Knaresborough, HG5 8AS. Take in the viaduct view, then walk down to the River Nidd for a relaxed finish to the day. Culture North Yorkshire

Alternative day in Ripon: Visit Ripon Cathedral, Minster Road, Ripon, HG4 1QT, in the morning. Spend the afternoon at Fountains Abbey and Studley Royal, Ripon, HG4 3DY. Search for Fountains Abbey Visitor Centre when navigating there; the National Trust warns that the postcode can lead to the wrong side of the estate. riponcathedral.org.uk

A weekend visit: all three towns

Saturday — Harrogate and Knaresborough: Begin at Valley Gardens, between Valley Drive and Cornwall Road, Harrogate. Enjoy lunch and shopping in Harrogate, then head to Knaresborough Castle, Castle Yard, Knaresborough, HG5 8AS, before walking down to the riverside. Visit North Yorkshire

Sunday — Ripon: Start at Ripon Cathedral, Minster Road, Ripon, HG4 1QT. After lunch, explore Fountains Abbey and Studley Royal, Ripon, HG4 3DY. Give the abbey and water garden as much of the afternoon as you can. riponcathedral.org.uk
