Volunteers have planted 1,800 trees near Harrogate as part of the White Rose Forest’s Landscapes for Water initiative. This project aims to improve water quality, reduce flooding, and enhance biodiversity in the Swale, Ure, Nidd, and Ouse (SUNO) catchments.
White Rose Forest Secures £7.5M for Yorkshire Tree Planting
The White Rose Forest has received £7.5 million in government funding to plant over 400 hectares of trees—equivalent to 560 football pitches—this year.

Adjacent to this natural haven, more wonders await. At the heart of Valley Gardens lies Bogs Field, a place of remarkable significance, where an extraordinary variety of mineral water springs, now transformed into wells, emerge. It’s believed to be home to more of these unique wells than any other place on Earth, with an impressive count of thirty-six out of Harrogate’s approximately one hundred mineral wells residing within the garden’s embrace, each one distinct from the others.
Valley Gardens is a place of perpetual transformation and rejuvenation, where the past and the present harmoniously coexist, allowing visitors to immerse themselves in a unique blend of nature, history, and horticultural excellence.. The gardens are continually being restored and regenerated with major works spearheaded by Friends of Valley Gardens, working with North Yorkshire Council who own and manage the gardens.

The Sun Pavilion at the northern edge of the park can be privately hired for weddings. Tennis courts and a bowling green are in the west of the park.
The Friends of Valley Gardens group was formed in 2009 to support the park. It works in partnership with Harrogate Borough Council to guide the park’s development.

Spanning an impressive 200 acres, it was originally established in 1778 by an act of Parliament. This unique parkland was designed with a noble purpose: to connect and preserve the numerous curative springs and wells that are a hallmark of Harrogate. Even today, the legislation mandates that any portion of The Stray removed, often necessitated by infrastructure projects like road widening, must be replaced elsewhere.
During the Victorian era, this area also featured a prominent racecourse for horses. The Stray stands as a testament to Harrogate’s commitment to preserving its natural heritage and providing a spacious and picturesque escape for both residents and visitors to enjoy.
