Goats to Shine at the Yorkshire Dales Cheese Festival

Frank Hunter’s goats at Piper Hole Farm in Ravenstonedale will take center stage at this weekend’s annual “Yorkshire Dales Cheese Festival: Celebrating Local Produce.”

Visitors can explore the farm, where goats are hand-milked and artisanal cheese is crafted. This is just one of over 40 events happening throughout the National Park, showcasing the best of local cheese.

Other festival highlights include the Wensleydale Creamery Experience in Hawes, a live mozzarella-making demonstration at The Courtyard Dairy near Settle, a “Cheese and Vinyl Sunday” at The Mess Room in Skipton, “Cheese and Climb” at How Stean Gorge, and a “Boots, Beer, Beef, and Cheese” event at The Wheatsheaf in Carperby.

Taking place from October 11 to 14, the Yorkshire Dales Cheese Festival is a vibrant celebration of community, tradition, and exceptional local produce.

Frank Hunter, who launched his goat milk enterprise 12 years ago, emphasizes the natural quality of his cheese: “Our goats rely entirely on the plants grown on our farm, not on any bought-in minerals or feed. This means our cheese is as natural as it gets, with no preservatives except salt.”

He explains the goats’ unique foraging habits: “They don’t graze—they browse. In summer, they selectively pick the heads of plants like knapweed, betony, and meadowsweet, which contributes to the distinctive flavor of our cheese.”

During the festival, Piper Hole Farm will be present at the Orton Farmers Market on Saturday, with visitors invited to tour the farm on Sunday.

With a flock of about 50 goats—25 currently in milk—Frank produces around 6kg of cheese daily, selling directly to consumers to maintain viability. “We’ve been told we are the only makers of crumbly goat cheese in the UK. In November, we’ll showcase our cheese at the World Cheese Awards in Portugal, where it’s fresh and mild after about three weeks of aging,” he said.

Derek Twine, Chair of the Yorkshire Dales National Park Authority, praised Piper Hole Farm as a model of sustainable upland farming. “The flower-rich meadows and diverse wildlife are integral to the story behind this delicious goat cheese,” he noted.

“Piper Hole is just one of many local businesses participating in the festival. Whether you’re a cheese connoisseur, a food enthusiast, or simply seeking a fun day out with family and friends, the Yorkshire Dales Cheese Festival has something for everyone.”

Twine added, “People often ask, ‘Where is the festival?’ The answer is there isn’t a single location. The Cheese Festival invites you to explore various local businesses across the National Park, each offering unique events and showcasing their exquisite products.”

North Yorkshire Council serves as the unitary authority governing the non-metropolitan county of North Yorkshire,  within the larger ceremonial county of North Yorkshire, England. Formerly a two-tier non-metropolitan county until 2023, it was overseen by North Yorkshire County Council. On April 1, 2023, the seven lower-tier districts within the county were dissolved, with their responsibilities assumed by the newly established unitary authority. County Hall in Northallerton, the county town, houses the council’s headquarters. With a population of 615,491 and spanning an area of 2,483 square miles (6,430 km2), the non-metropolitan county that encompasses a significant portion of the larger ceremonial county. The remaining parts of the ceremonial county are under the administration of the unitary authorities of Redcar and Cleveland, Middlesbrough, Stockton-on-Tees (part), and York. The council’s origins trace back to 1974, following the abolition of North Riding County Council, with County Hall in Northallerton serving as its base ever since. Initially, the non-metropolitan county comprised eight districts: York, Craven, Hambleton, Harrogate, Richmondshire, Ryedale, Scarborough, and Selby. In 1996, the City of York expanded its jurisdiction by incorporating parishes from the districts of Harrogate, Ryedale, and Selby, subsequently becoming a unitary authority independent from the non-metropolitan county. Reorganisation efforts commenced in October 2020, with the Government inviting councils in North Yorkshire and the City of York Council to propose reorganization plans into unitary local authorities. The county council advocated for a single unitary council for its administrative area, while the district councils (excluding Hambleton) proposed an eastern council encompassing Ryedale, Scarborough, Selby, and York, alongside a western council comprising Craven, Hambleton, Harrogate, and Richmondshire. Following public consultation, in July 2021, the Communities Secretary, Robert Jenrick, endorsed the county council’s proposal, scheduling the first elections for the new unitary authority in May 2022.
