Newby Hall opens its largest outdoor art exhibition

A stately home in North Yorkshire has launched its most ambitious sculpture trail to date, celebrating the largest display in the 19-edition history

Newby Hall’s Largest Outdoor Art Exhibition

This summer, Newby Hall and Gardens in Ripon, North Yorkshire, invites you to experience its biggest outdoor art exhibition to date. Launching on 20 June and running until 28 September, Newby25  brings together over 60 sculptures by 27 nationally and internationally acclaimed artists, making it the most ambitious edition in the event’s 19-year history.

 What Awaits You

The 2025 sculpture trail is set against Newby’s stunning landscapes, beginning for the first time outside the Roman statue gallery. From there, the trail meanders through:

  • 🌸 Formal Gardens – award-winning designs, recently honoured with a Gold Medal at RHS Chelsea Flower Show.

  • 🌳 Ancient Woodland – discover sculptures hidden among centuries-old trees.

  • 🍎 The Orchard – nature and creativity in perfect harmony.

The route has been expanded, making this year’s trail a true dialogue between art and nature.

 Exhibition Highlights

  • David Watkinson (Leeds) – kinetic sculptures blending graceful motion with engineering skill.

  • Katie Ventress & Janet FraserIridescent Omen, a magpie sculpture uniting blacksmithing with stained glass.

  • Hamish Mackie (Newby debut) – three breathtaking works:

    • A life-size bronze leopard climbing a tree

    • Two majestic bronze roe deer

    • A striking Jurassic ammonite fossil crafted from stainless steel

Curated by Orlando Compton, whose family owns Newby Hall, the exhibition combines traditional craftsmanship and contemporary imagination in a setting steeped in heritage.
