Our History
Harrogate Housing was originally known as Harrogate Families Housing Association and was established in 1968. It is an exempt charity, registered with the Regulator of Social Housing, and has proudly served the Harrogate community for more than five decades.
The Association was created in response to a 1968 local appeal launched to mark the 20th anniversary of the United Nations Declaration on Human Rights. Its founding purpose was to meet the growing housing need in Harrogate by providing good-quality accommodation at affordable rents — values that continue to define the organisation today.
Our Growth and Development
Through the generosity of fundraising, donations, property gifts, bequests, government grants, and loans, the Association steadily expanded its work and housing stock.
Today, Harrogate Housing owns and manages 275 homes across Harrogate and the surrounding district. Our portfolio includes:
-
A supported housing scheme for young people, operated in partnership with Foundation, a local support provider.
-
A number of dispersed properties for people recovering from alcohol and drug dependency, managed in collaboration with Changing Lives.
-
Close cooperation with North Yorkshire Council to support the delivery of local housing strategies and the development of new homes.
Partnerships and Managed Properties
In addition to the homes we directly own, Harrogate Housing manages 33 properties on behalf of Harrogate Flower Fund Homes, another long-established local housing association.
Since 1 October 2017, we have also served as the sole corporate trustee of Applegarth Homes, an almshouse comprising 10 properties. These homes are leased to the Association and form part of our total housing portfolio.
Our Local Commitment
Remaining true to our grassroots origins, Harrogate Housing operates exclusively within the boundaries of the former Harrogate District.
While the Association’s early focus was on the needs of families, our services have evolved to meet the needs of a diverse range of residents and customer groups. Despite this growth, our commitment remains constant — to be local, approachable, and customer-focused in every aspect of what we do.
Our Ongoing Vision
For over fifty years, Harrogate Housing has built a legacy of trust, quality, and community care.
As we look to the future, we remain dedicated to providing safe, affordable homes and to supporting the wellbeing of the people who make Harrogate such a vibrant place to live.

Helping you create a home near family & work
We are a small, but expanding, housing association who only operate in the Harrogate District. We offer homes for rent and on a shared ownership basis.
With a personal, local service we want to help our customers create homes near family and work.
We are currently experiencing a low turnover of our properties and our waiting list is currently only open for those seeking a one bedroom property.
