£9.4m Harrogate Convention Centre Upgrade Begins in Major Transformation

Work has officially started on a £9.4 million upgrade of Harrogate Convention Centre, bringing major improvements to one of North Yorkshire’s most important conference and events venues.

The transformation of the landmark Harrogate Convention Centre on King’s Road is designed to secure its long-term future, attract more conferences and events, and help Harrogate compete with leading conference destinations across the UK.

Hundreds of thousands of delegates and visitors attend the venue each year, making it a major contributor to the Harrogate visitor economy and generating valuable business for hotels, restaurants, cafés, shops and other local businesses.

What is changing at Harrogate Convention Centre?

The £9.4m Harrogate Convention Centre upgrade will include larger breakout rooms, improvements to the existing cooling systems to help reduce energy costs, new carpets and new wooden frontages.

North Yorkshire Council says modernising the building is essential to ensure Harrogate remains competitive in the increasingly important UK conference, exhibition, and events market.

Council leader Cllr Carl Les said: “We recognise that the building needs to be modernised to make sure that it can continue to compete alongside its rivals in the conferencing sector.”

Why the £9.4m investment matters to Harrogate

The Convention Centre is much more than an events venue. Major conferences and exhibitions bring thousands of people into Harrogate town centre, supporting accommodation providers, restaurants, bars, cafés, shops, taxis and other services.

That makes the centre an important part of Harrogate’s wider tourism and hospitality economy.

Local business leaders have described the Convention Centre as a central part of Harrogate’s economy, highlighting the importance of maintaining a competitive venue capable of attracting major national and international events.

North Yorkshire Council expects the £9.4 million investment to pay for itself within around 10 years through additional income generated by the improved venue.

More than 40 years of Harrogate history

Harrogate Convention Centre has been at the heart of the town’s events industry for more than four decades.

The venue was built in 1982 – the same year Harrogate famously hosted the Eurovision Song Contest, putting the North Yorkshire spa town in the international spotlight.

Today, Harrogate Convention Centre features a 2,000-seat auditorium and approximately 13,000 square metres of exhibition space, allowing it to accommodate major conferences, exhibitions, trade shows, entertainment and large-scale events.

Previous redevelopment plans were shelved

The latest investment follows previous proposals to redevelop Harrogate Convention Centre.

An earlier scheme was shelved in 2024 as rising costs made the plans increasingly difficult to deliver.

The new £9.4m programme instead focuses on targeted improvements designed to modernise the existing venue and strengthen its commercial performance.

When will the Harrogate Convention Centre upgrade be completed?

Work on the transformation is expected to be completed in spring 2027.

The investment marks a significant new chapter for one of Harrogate’s best-known buildings and could help the town attract more conferences, exhibitions and visitors in the years ahead.
