Groom Suit and Tuxedo Styles: Find Your Perfect Wedding Look

Choosing the perfect groom suit or tuxedo is one of the most important style decisions for your wedding day. From classic formalwear to relaxed, modern options, today’s groom can tailor his look to match the wedding dress code, season, and location — while expressing his own personality and style.

Tuxedo

The tuxedo is the ultimate black-tie option, ideal for formal evening weddings. Traditionally crafted in black or midnight blue with satin lapels, it’s paired with a crisp white dress shirt, black bow tie, and polished black dress shoes. A timeless symbol of elegance, the tuxedo ensures a sophisticated, red-carpet-ready look.

Three-Piece Suit

A three-piece wedding suit — jacket, trousers, and matching waistcoat — is a refined and versatile choice for both traditional and modern ceremonies. It allows the groom to stand out subtly, especially if the groomsmen are wearing two-piece suits.

Morning Suit

A morning suit remains a classic choice for formal daytime weddings, especially in the UK. This traditional ensemble includes a tailcoat, striped trousers, a waistcoat, and a tie — perfect for elegant country or city ceremonies steeped in British heritage.

Lounge Suit

A lounge suit can be worn as a two-piece or three-piece, making it a stylish yet flexible choice for semi-formal weddings. Popular shades such as navy, charcoal, and grey lend timeless appeal that suits any season.

Vintage or Tweed Suit

A tweed suit offers rustic charm and vintage sophistication, making it a favourite for countryside or barn weddings. Its textured fabric and warm tones create a distinctive and memorable look.

Casual Wedding Attire

For laid-back celebrations such as beach weddings or outdoor summer events, casual groom attire like linen or cotton suits — or even a blazer paired with chinos — offers comfort and style in equal measure.

Wedding Suit Fabrics and Colours

The right fabric and colour set the tone for your entire look. Both should complement the wedding’s season, theme, and formality.

Common Fabrics

  • Wool: A year-round classic that works beautifully for both formal and semi-formal weddings.

  • Linen or Cotton: Lightweight and breathable, perfect for summer or destination weddings.

  • Tweed or Velvet: Luxurious, heavier options ideal for autumn and winter celebrations.

Popular Colours

  • Navy and Charcoal: Timeless, elegant, and suitable for almost any wedding style.

  • Light Blue and Grey: Perfect for spring or daytime weddings with a softer palette.

  • Beige or Tan: A stylish choice for outdoor or beach weddings.

  • Green or Burgundy: Rich, seasonal tones that add depth to autumn and winter looks.

  • Black: Best for evening or black-tie weddings to achieve a classic, formal aesthetic.

Groom Accessories: The Finishing Touches

Accessories add personality and polish to any wedding suit and can help coordinate with the overall theme.

  • Neckwear: A tie or bow tie should match the formality of the outfit.

  • Pocket Square: Adds colour or pattern — it should complement, not match, your tie.

  • Shoes: Black Oxford shoes for formal looks; loafers or brogues for relaxed styles.

  • Cufflinks: A subtle way to add individuality or tradition.

  • Boutonnière: A floral detail that highlights the groom and ties into the wedding décor.

  • Waistcoat: Can match or contrast with the suit for added visual interest.

Tailoring and Fit: The Key to a Perfect Groom Suit

The most important factor in any wedding suit is the fit. A perfectly tailored suit enhances your silhouette, ensures comfort, and elevates your overall appearance. Whether you choose an off-the-rack suit or a custom-tailored design, professional adjustments are essential.

For best results, purchase your wedding suit 2–3 months in advance to allow time for fittings and alterations. A well-tailored look guarantees you’ll feel as confident as you look when you walk down the aisle.
