Rugby Football History: The Split Between Rugby Union and Rugby League

Rugby football split into two distinct codes in 1895, marking one of the most significant moments in sporting history. The divide occurred at the George Hotel in Huddersfield, where twenty-one clubs from the North of England resigned from the Rugby Football Union to form the Northern Rugby Football Union, later renamed the Rugby Football League in 1922.

The split was driven by disagreement over “broken-time payments”. Northern clubs, whose players were often working-class, wanted to compensate players for wages lost while playing rugby. The Rugby Football Union insisted on strict amateurism, refusing any form of payment. This disagreement led to the creation of rugby league, which became the first rugby code to turn professional and openly pay its players.

By contrast, rugby union remained amateur for another 100 years. It finally adopted professionalism in 1995, following the Rugby World Cup in South Africa, transforming the modern game at both club and international level.

Today, the two codes are governed separately. World Rugby oversees rugby union worldwide, while the Rugby League International Federation governs rugby league. This historic split continues to shape the structure, culture, and identity of rugby across the UK and globally.
