Nearly 2,000 Demand Urgent Action on Knaresborough Landslip Before Winter
If you have walked beside the River Nidd or stopped to admire Knaresborough’s famous railway viaduct, you will know why this part of the town means so much to residents, visitors and local businesses.
Now, nearly 2,000 people have signed a petition calling for urgent work at Viaduct Terrace, where part of the riverside walkway collapsed in February.
Campaigners fear another winter could cause further erosion, increase repair costs and place one of Knaresborough’s best-known locations at even greater risk.

Why Are Residents So Concerned?

Campaigners believe waiting until 2027 could allow the damage to worsen. They warn that a repair currently considered manageable could develop into what they describe as a “multi-million-pound disaster”.
Their immediate request is for North Yorkshire Council to carry out “meaningful stabilisation works” before winter weather places additional pressure on the site.

The campaign was established by Liberal Democrat councillors Hannah Gostlow and Matt Walker.
Both represent Knaresborough on North Yorkshire Council and also sit on Knaresborough Town Council.
The petition is due to be considered by councillors at a meeting of the Harrogate and Knaresborough Area Committee on 24 September.

The petition highlights the importance of the riverside to Knaresborough’s identity, visitor economy and everyday community life.
It states:
“The Knaresborough Viaduct is the heart of our town’s character and one of North Yorkshire’s most treasured landmarks.
“However, the ongoing landslip at Viaduct Terrace now threatens the safety, beauty and economic vitality of our riverside.”
Could Local Businesses Be Affected?
The riverside is a major attraction for visitors exploring Knaresborough, particularly during the busy spring and summer seasons.
Campaigners argue that continuing disruption could affect the independent shops, cafés and boat-hire businesses that rely on people visiting the area.
For residents, the issue is also about protecting an important walking route and preserving the setting around one of the town’s most photographed views.
What Has North Yorkshire Council Said?
North Yorkshire Council has said it is working to award a contract for the repairs, with the main project currently expected to take place in summer 2027.
Campaigners are not asking the council to complete the entire restoration immediately. Instead, they want stabilisation measures introduced before winter to reduce the risk of further movement and erosion.
What Happened to Train Services?
The viaduct carries passenger trains between Leeds, Harrogate and York.
Services were temporarily cancelled after the walkway collapsed in February but resumed the following day.

Attention will now turn to the Harrogate and Knaresborough Area Committee meeting on 24 September, when councillors are expected to consider the petition.
