New owners for Lightwater Valley as North Yorkshire theme park enters exciting new era

One of North Yorkshire’s best-known theme parks, Lightwater Valley, is set for a major revival after being acquired by the Nottingham-based, family-owned Mellors Group.

Founded in 1969, Lightwater Valley has been a long-standing favourite for family days out and was once home to The Ultimate rollercoaster, famously recognised as the world’s longest rollercoaster. Now, the historic adventure park near Harrogate is preparing for a new chapter following the takeover, which was completed in December.

New rides and attractions planned for 2026

The Mellors Group has confirmed ambitious plans for Lightwater Valley, including the introduction of new rides and attractions from 2026. While the park will continue to cater for younger families and children under 12, the new owners aim to broaden its appeal, creating experiences that the whole family can enjoy together.

This strategy is designed to strengthen Lightwater Valley’s position as a leading family theme park in North Yorkshire, while also attracting new visitors from across Yorkshire and the wider UK.

Mellors Group vision for Lightwater Valley

James Mellors, Managing Director of the Mellors Group, said:
“Our goal is simple: to put Lightwater Valley back on the map as a major theme park. By introducing new rides, injecting fresh energy and investing in the park for the long term, we want to create something truly special for families for many years to come.”

The Mellors Group is well known for its work in the leisure and attractions sector, and its investment is expected to bring renewed confidence and long-term stability to the park.

Boost for tourism in North Yorkshire

Lightwater Valley’s location close to Harrogate makes it a key attraction for both local residents and tourists visiting North Yorkshire. The announcement of new ownership and future development plans is expected to provide a welcome boost to the region’s tourism economy.

With preparations already under way and further announcements expected in due course, anticipation is growing ahead of what promises to be an action-packed 2026 season.

For fans old and new, the takeover signals a fresh start for one of Yorkshire’s most iconic theme parks, with Lightwater Valley once again aiming to secure its place as a must-visit family attraction in the UK.
